One of the things that I've noticed is this belief that there's a new threat against Polytheism by those that aren't Christian. Just like it was with the Christians. However this belief is well founded in the here and now and I want to spend time talking about it. Back when Christianity had firmly developed as a powerful force in the ancient world their target was the pagans. They would later on target Jews and Muslim due to their non-belief in Christ.
Hundreds of thousands of people that believed in the old gods were killed and society entered the dark ages when advancements didn't take place and everyone was pretty much filthy and unable to read or write. Of course there were times that people bathed but the technology that allowed clearer people was lost. Polytheists did all these things. Made huge advancement in many areas and lived in towns that were able to hold large groups of people.
The new threat comes from the children of Christians that view their way to be the only way. Anti-Theists, or those that hate everything to do with religion, have come out in full force against religion. Usually their target are the three 'book' religions but they have made it clear that any group that believes in anything are fair game. To them we are all backwards, back wood, unintelligent, hicks that believe in some sky father and need to be shown the way and to come over to their way of thinking.
This is why their far more dangerous than Christianity could ever of been. They use the so-called 'separation of church and state' to attack religious beliefs and practices that aren't confined to a church or a house. Polytheists are more in-danger of this as we do our rituals anywhere that we can, no matter if anyone doesn't like it. Anti-theists want a country that is so secular that any displays of religion are outlawed. Any devotional necklaces, any special clothes, no anything.
What will happen if they get their way and we become like France? What will happen if they call the police on us because we are pouring libations to Pan? Or what if a teen that's a Polytheist is wearing a devotional necklace to Hecate or Athena. Heck even one to the Norse gods. What will happen if the teacher tells that teen that his/her necklace violates the law? Polytheists need to be on the defensive as this is our traditions that are right up next for the chopping block.
And don't think that just because we're small that we can't be affected. Both Christian and Secular worlds are as much of a danger to the return of Polytheistic beliefs. And as we get more and more visible both groups will be on the attack, just like Christianity is still attacking Wicca. However it will be the anti-theists that will be the one that will be ready to burn the books again.
